From North to South!

Cape Kidnappers

Along with Marilyn and Warwick we braved a 5 hour walk along the beach in beautiful weather! This is the last point Zoe got to when her feet got wet as from then on David carried her over the water! What a gentleman - passers by were most impressed!

The end of the walk took us to a cliff top where there was a huge colony of gannets. Amazing sight if not a little smelly!

A Change of seasons

It really is getting colder!

Mount Doom!

We took a stroll - 7 hours of walking to a height of 2700m - up to the top of a mountain named Ruapehu - otherwise known as Mordor from Lord of the Rings. In the background of the picture you can see another rather large mountain which was Mount Doom. As you can see it was a little on the chilly side! The last time Ruapehu erupted it wiped out everything in a 2km radius - it is still an active volcano!

Warming Up!

We took the chance to escape the cold by spending some time in the natural hot spring warm waters of Kerosene Creek.

Super 14

We couldn't go too long without seeing sport of some kind now could we!

This was taken at a Super 14 Rugby match between the Highlanders and the Bulls. We have now adopted the Highlanders as out team while we are here.

Zoe is enjoying a hot dog (on a stick!) and the drink of choice in New Zealand L & P.

THE SOUTH ISLAND

Abel Tasman National Park

We went for a fantastic walk along the coastal part of the National Park and is was probably one of the most beautiful things we have seen so far. The forest was amazing as were the beaches. The end of the walk took us to a seal colony and it was just wonderful to see them playing and living in a natural environment. And of course no walk would be complete without a diversion by David!!! Look no hands Mum!

Golden Bay

As the sun goes down it is nearly time for bed!

And on the menu tonight.......

At last! David finally caught a fish! and not only did he catch it but also killed it and cooked it for our supper! Sadly no chips to accompany it though!

So how did you do on your Lord of the Rings quiz?

What has been going on here - Katharine has gone volunteering with the National Trust as it is Easter holiday. So there is a party here every night (or so the story goes). Really there is lots of banned food like walnuts and mushrooms.
Last weekend I also went for a proper run. It started by a castle and we started down hill which was okay except we were going to end up with a steep uphill run... I am in training for a local half marathon but can't be taking it too seriously (as I don't think I am likely to win!).
Did have some NZ wine the other night in your honour. Not sure I like the Indian idea as their wine is not world famous - guess we will have to stick to food in your honour next.

I am hungry now! Off for something to nibble before some revising...

David, that looks like ONE good fish, I hope Zoe isn't relying on you as the hunter or she might go a bit hungry!! It all looks great keep having a good time - try to keep warm. Spring is well sprung here now - with lots of Daffs and Tulips in bloom - and of course we are surrounded by lambs. Love Dad

Well it is now Summer here. Last weekend was very much an outdoor type weekend. No doubt it will all be over by my next day off.

Katharine went fence building in her long (teacher) holiday - she says you have to look at her photos on facebook. Yes it is that exciting building fences; the sequel will be "walls I have painted" or something.
Just be lucky we can't attach photos....

AND ANOTHER TALE JUST FOR LAUGHS

An American tourist in London decides to leave his tour group and explore the city on his own. He wanders around, seeing the sights, occasionally stopping at a pub to soak up the local culture, chat with the locals, and have a pint.

After a while, he finds himself in a very nice neighborhood with big, stately residences...no pubs, no shops, no restaurants, and worst of all no toilets.

He really, really has to go, after all those beers. He finds a narrow side street, with high walls surrounding the buildings and decides to use the wall to solve his problem.

As he is unzipping, he is tapped on the shoulder by a policeman, "I say, sir, you simply cannot do that here, you know."

"I'm very sorry, officer," replies the American, "but I really, really have to go, and I just can't find a toilet."

"Ah, yes," said the policeman..."Just follow me". He leads the American to a back gate, which he opens.

"In there," points the policeman. "Go ahead sir, anywhere you like."

The fellow enters and finds himself in the most beautiful garden he has ever seen. Manicured grass lawns, statues, fountains, sculptured hedges, and huge beds of gorgeous flowers, all in perfect bloom.

Since he has the policeman's blessing, he relieves himself and feels much more comfortable. As he goes back through the gate, he says to the police officer, "That was really decent of you... is that what you call English hospitality?"

"No sir...", replied the police officer, "...that is what we call the French Embassy."

Have a great week.
